You are...a PROMISE!

You are…a promise with a capital "P!"

With five-year old gusto and pigtails swishing, I used to belt out this Sunday school favorite -

I am a promise.   I am a possibility.  I am a promise with a capital "P."
I am a great big bundle of potentiality.
And I am learnin' to hear God's voice
And I am tryin' to make the right choice.
I'm a promise to be anything God wants me to be
Anything God wants me to be!
(Bill & Gloria Gaither, 1975)

I could sure use some of that youthful energy and enthusiasm right now.  I have to confess that lately I’ve been struggling to see the promise and possibility in my life.  Another military family move has put me back at square one and I’ve been floundering to find where I fit in the picture.  In the background I see fellow mamas achieve significant feats in their ministries, parenting, marriages, and professions, and in moments of weakness, I start to question: What’s my part in the plan? Does God have a role for me to play?  Do I have anything worthwhile to give?

As I’ve asked these questions, God has gently been reminding me that yes, I am still “a great big bundle of potentiality.”  With loving nudges, He’s been letting me know that He designed me to be exactly who I am at exactly this time to join Him in His plan and purpose.  (Esther 4:14)

Maybe you’re like me and you’ve been wondering if what you do and your life matter in the grand scheme of things, and God tells us, YES! It does!  In Ephesians 2:10 we’re reminded that, “God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.” (NCV)

He made us what we are, each of us with unique traits, experiences, circumstances and personalities for our own specially designed role that only we can carry out.  As his children, we have promise and potential. He designed something great for each of us to do and gave us what we need to do it.

1 Peter 4:10  tell us,“Each of you has been blessed with one of God’s many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use your gift well.” (CEV)

(Check out 1 Corinthians 7:7 and Romans 12:3-8 too!)

I’ve recently been working through Daniel, Lives of Integrity, Words of Prophecy by Beth Moore in my Bible study group.  It’s amazing how God used Beth to give me a little boost of encouragement.  She writes in the study, “True God-seekers do not outlive their usefulness. If we’re still here, God’s still working. His greatest revelation to you and His most life-altering move in your life may be ahead. Never think for a moment that you’ve seen the last of God.” (pg. 196)

Author: Christine Caldwell
What might happen if we live out the simple lessons of that children’s song, opening ourselves up to hear God’s voice when we question our purpose and committing to follow His lead, confident that He lovingly made us with promise and possibility?

“Open up before God, keep nothing back; he'll do whatever needs to be done:
He'll validate your life in the clear light of day and stamp you with approval at high noon.”
Psalm 37:5-6(MSG)

Won't you sing this with me?
